Hiring Post: Looking for a Part-time Finance Officer

Job Description

The Part-time Finance Officer will play a key role in supporting the financial management of Northampton Town of Sanctuary, ensuring robust financial systems and supporting the organization’s growth and sustainability. Reporting to the Treasurer and the Lead Co-ordinator, the Finance Officer will work closely with the funding committee and board members to manage finances, monitor budgets, and assist in securing funding for future projects. The position is part-time, requiring 10.5 hours a week, with on-site work twice a week or more as needed.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Understand and maintain the accounts of NToS, supporting the annual audit process.
  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of income, expenditure, and financial transactions.
  • Regularly update the treasurer and board on financial status and any emerging issues.

Budget Development

  • Develop and manage a macro-based budget database to log income, expenditure, and transactions.
  • Regularly update and monitor the budget to ensure it aligns with organizational goals and funding availability.
  • Work with the funding committee to understand and respond to the financial needs of the organization.

Funding Strategy & Monitoring

  • Develop a Funding Strategy and Budget Monitoring Document to track financial progress and potential gaps.
  • Assist in identifying potential funding sources and ensuring NToS can continue its mission by securing grants.
  • Support the co-ordinator in grant applications, providing financial insights and budget information for proposals.

Training & Development

  • Participate in financial training as required to understand and navigate the funding landscape of NToS and the refugee/migration sector.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant financial regulations and best practices.

Communication & Advisory

  • Proactively inform the board and treasurer about any financial issues, risks, or concerns.
  • Provide insights and advice on managing finances efficiently and effectively.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience in finance or accounting roles is essential.
  • Knowledge of budget management and financial reporting, particularly in the charitable sector, is advantageous.
  • Experience with financial software (such as Excel, QuickBooks, or similar) is required.

SKILLS:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple financial processes.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills to handle multiple tasks effectively.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A finance-related qualification or ongoing studies in finance, accounting, or a related field is a plus.
  • Understanding of the refugee and migration sector or the public service, particularly regarding the financial challenges faced by organizations in this space.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Hours: 10.50 hours per week, with the flexibility to work on-site up to two days a week or more if needed.
  • Contract: 1 year post, possibility of extension
  • Location: On-site at NToS office, with potential for some remote work.
  • Salary: £12.50 per hour
